In the late 1940s, Central Germany became a focal point of the nuclear arms race: to turn Stalin’s bomb into reality, the mining company "Wismut" extracted thousands of tons of uranium ore under the strictest secrecy as reparations for Moscow.
Produced for ZDFinfo, LUMALENSCAPE created the two-part documentary "Deadly Legacy of the DDR – German Uranium for Moscow’s Bombs". Following striking historical traces, deeply personal stories, and exclusive footage from Saxony’s mines, the project reveals the devastating human and ecological toll, as well as the radioactive legacy that still marks both people and nature today.
